10 ATS-Friendly Resume Tips to Pass Screening

Most job applications never reach a human being. That's not pessimism — it's how hiring works in 2025. Roughly 75% of resumes are filtered out by Applicant Tracking Systems before a recruiter opens them. The good news? ATS software isn't judging your creativity. It's scanning for structure, keywords, and clarity. Fix those three things and you're already ahead of the majority of applicants.

1. Use a single-column layout

Multi-column designs confuse most parsers. The system reads left-to-right, top-to-bottom. When content sits in parallel columns, sections get interleaved — your skills end up jumbled with your job titles. Stick with one column. You lose nothing visually and gain everything in parseability.

2. Label your sections with standard headings

ATS software looks for "Experience," "Education," "Skills," and "Summary." Creative variations like "Where I've Made an Impact" or "My Journey" get skipped entirely. Keep your section headers boring. The content underneath can still be compelling.

3. Put your contact info in the body, not headers or footers

This trips up more people than you'd expect. Word processors have header and footer regions that sit outside the main document flow. Many ATS parsers ignore those regions completely. Your name, email, phone number, and LinkedIn URL should all live in the main body of the document.

4. Avoid tables, text boxes, and graphics

6. Mirror the job description's language

7. Spell out acronyms (at least once)

9. Don't stuff keywords invisibly

10. Keep file names clean

"JohnSmith_Resume_2025.pdf" is fine. "final_FINAL_v3_edited(1).docx" is not. Some systems use the file name in their interface, and hiring managers see it. A clean name also signals that you're organized — a small detail that compounds with everything else.
